The aim is to study the history, visual languages and cultures of ancient Beiwei calligraphy and type design. Beiwei was a favourable calligraphy style among Hong Kong business owners since the 1950s. The study includes the Beiwei application ranges from shop signs, logotypes, posters, packaging, and truck stencils to namecards, through design thinking and type design.The knowledge is then further developed into a new generation of Beiwei Chinese type design, “Zansyu”, and published as The Study of Beiwei Calligraphy and Type Design (2018), co-authored by Adonian Chan and Ire Tsui. The book includes detailed stories behind the history of Beiwei Kaishu since its origins in 4th century China, including the Beiwei Kaishu stone inscription from the Northern and Southern Dynasty, Beiwei Calligraphy by Zhao Zhiqian in the 19th century Qing Dynasty and 20th century renowned calligraphers work on shop signboards, buildings etc. in Hong Kong, Macao, China Towns across south-east asia, japan and overseas. The project members came from type design professions and cultural design research backgrounds. The team includes type designer and musician Adonian Chan; design editor and researcher Ire Tsui. The project started its first crowdfunding campaign in the winter of 2022. VisionThe Beiwei Zansyu project aims to explore the infinite creative possibilities of Chinese type design with creatives, cultural experts, designers from different disciplines, students and the public. As a cultural institute, it concerns how to promote the awareness of food ecology and environmental protection, through arts and cultural activities. That's the reason to devise this programme, which consists of workshop, farm visit, lecture and performance. The aim is to transfer the knowledge from the experts to the general public in a fun and approaching manners. Experience learning methodology is our focus here, human learns way faster through 5 senses: serious discussion is made through tasting, smelling, touching and sharing of food. The performance is in fact the climax of this programme, where personal memories, social and cultural meanings of dishes are explored and presented.OutcomeTo transfer the hardcore knowledge of food ecology successfully, the programme is designed in an approachable manner, e.g. colourful key visual. Instead of a series of lecture, accessible events like farm visit and performance are more attractive to families and children. To facilitate the discussion during workshop, design thinking method is applied, where people of diverse background can express their opinions. The performance is the focal point of the whole programme, where 5 dishes were newly designed based on the participants' personal stories. The participant then wrote his/her own monologue to present in the performance. Audience was able to listen to AND taste the stories at the same time. The prototype consists of 15 geometrical forms, made by die-cutting technique at Willey Printing and Box Cutting Factory in Chai Wan, and paper sponsored by Antalis HK. Following a few simple steps of "See &amp; Make" character - making instructions, our design inspires people to create 2D &amp; 3D graphical and animal characters, such as dragons, bats, birds, or other motifs inspired by the Mansion, and participate actively in the making of DIY souvenirs. Collaborating with Mr Lee, a local one-man metal-factory craftsman, Rony Chan reinterpreted the iconic hexagon into a set of candle holders, ranging in three different dimensions and heights.
